Park Location
SPOT committee members have obtained a parcel of town owned land as a site for the dog park. The land is toward the rear of Phillips Park.
This area has been identified as the most logical location for a community park accessible to off-leash dogs and their owners because:
- It is centrally located in the heart of Swampscott, and convenient to all residents.
- It is currently used only for overflow parking.
- It presents ample parking and available access for the elderly and physically challenged.
- There is suitable space for multiple dogs to exercise and play.
- The terrain would require minimum preparation to create a dog park and minimum maintenance.
- Pre-existing fencing on at least one side would reduce the cost necessary to construct the park.
The youth playing fields are currently used by some dog owners to exercise their pets. With the new dog park adjacent to these fields, we believe having such a resource nearby would encourage dog owners to visit the designated and approved dog park area instead of the playing fields.
